FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the sector developing an Anti-Black Racism Strategy?
Infant, child, and youth mental health agencies recognize that anti-Black racism is a reality that permeates society, including this sector. These agencies stand firmly with the Black community in condemning all forms of racism.

As such, we have formed this Task Force with the mandate to develop a multi-year strategy that seeks to make a measurable positive impact in the sector. This strategy will help align the sector’s programs, policies, and practices with best practices in anti-racism and anti-oppression.
How is information being collected to inform the development of the strategy?

The consultants will collect information through an online survey that is open to all members of the community as well as agency staff, management, and board members.

The consultants will also facilitate a series of small group discussions that will ask participants about their perspectives, experiences, and recommendations for change.
Who is leading this work?
To guide this work, the sector created the Anti-Black Racism Task Force, which comprises staff from a cross-section of agencies working in the area of infant, child, and youth mental health. The Task Force will guide the work of a consultant who will engage in consultations with the Black community as well as with agency staff, management, and board members.

The Task Force has contracted with Tana Turner and her firm, Turner Consulting Group, to conduct the research and consultations. She will also work with the Anti-Black Racism Task Force to develop the strategy. She has worked with many non-profits and public sector organizations as they have embarked on their equity journeys. Most recently, her firm worked with the York Region District School Board to develop its Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy.
Will the agency know that I participated in the consultations?
No. Your participation in the online survey and focus groups will be completely voluntary and anonymous. No one at any of the agencies will know that you have participated or be able to trace the information that you've shared back to you.
Will my information be kept confidential?
Yes. All information is collected anonymously. The consultants will summarize the themes heard based on what participants share during the consultations. This information will be summarized and supplemented with findings from a review of the literature. Your name and other identifying information will not be included in their summary.

Only Turner Consulting Group will have access to the online survey. They will analyze the data and only provide a summary to the Task Force.

The consultants will also facilitate the small group conversations. You can register directly with them. The consultants will not report to the Task Force who participated in the consultations.
How will this information be used?
The information collected through the online survey and focus groups will be used to:
  • Identify the mental health issues facing Black infants, children, and youth
  • Identify issues they face with accessing mental health services, and
  • Identify the priorities and actions to include in the strategy.
